Astrid Mertens is a Belgian classical guitarist who discovered her love for the instrument at a young age. Captivated by the guitar’s unique blend of delicacy and power, she quickly realized it was a passion she wanted to pursue. She earned her master’s degree Magna Cum Laude at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, under the guidance of Omán Kaminsky and Roland Broux.

Astrid has performed for audiences both in Belgium and abroad. Her interpretations are praised for their rich sound and natural musicality. In June 2026, she was invited to record a solo performance for Siccas Guitars, one of the world’s leading platforms for the classical guitar. She also is an active competitor and has recently reached the semi finals of the Forum Gitarre Wien, CGWC 2026 and Hanse Guitar Cup.

She has a particular affinity for 20th-century music, with the music of Joaquín Rodrigo holding a special place in her repertoire. She has performed his Concierto de Aranjuez on several occasions, accompanied by pianist Annemie Wuyts.

Astrid has also participated in masterclasses with some of the world’s most renowned guitarists, including Sergio Assad, Alvaro Pierri, Zoran Dukić and Antigoni Goni, among others. These encounters continue to inspire and shape her musical development to this day.

Alongside her work as a soloist, Astrid thrives in collaboration. She is an active chamber musician and has performed with a variety of ensembles at concerts and festivals, including OORtreders and the Transit Festival. She is currently a member of Ensemble XXI, performing works on both classical and electric guitar. As part of the ensemble, she has had the opportunity to collaborate with Ed Spanjaard, Nadar Ensemble and Hermes Ensemble, among others. These experiences have been deeply enriching, continually broadening her perspective and offering new valuable insights.

Together with Yenthe Geudens she is one half of the performing guitar duo Duo Otare. Together, they’ve already had the opportunity to perform at venues such as AMUZ, De Singel, Casino Houthalen-Helchteren, and more. Their playing has been described as: “So beautifully balanced, with a wonderful interplay” – Annette Kruisbrink. Astrid has also performed in duo settings with cello, violin, voice, percussion and piano.
